CMSC 28500

Introduction to Numerical Computation

Prerequisites: MATH 20500 and 25000, and CMSC 10500 or 11500; or consent of instructor. Advanced knowledge of FORTRAN, C, or Pascal; and basic knowledge of multivariable calculus and linear algebra.

Catalog Description: Basic processes of numerical computation are examined from both an experimental and theoretical point of view. The course deals with numerical linear algebra, approximation of functions, approximate integration and differentiation, Fourier transformation, solution of nonlinear equations, and the approximate solution of initial value problems for ordinary differential equations. The course concentrates on the most widely used methods in each area covered.
