Catalog Description: Introduction to the use of XML, the XML Document Types, and the various protocols that are used in Web Services (such as SOAP, WSDL, WSIL, and UDDI). This course will cover how to use these protocols to write Web Services, both from the client and the service standpoint. Extensive use of Java and XML is involved.

MicroSoft has changed their entire Windows platform to be based on their .NET technology. IBM is changing a big chunk of their platforms to be based on their WebSphere technology. Even the Globus Project (the leader in Grid Programming technologies) is changing their platform to be based on OGSA. What do these have in common? All of these platforms are based on Web Services. Web Services is an extension of the Internet or Web programming that has seen explosive growth in popularity since the mid-90's.The extensions allow other programs to utilize the services, not just web browsers. The extensions are also based on the eXtensible Markup Language (XML), which has also seen an explosive growth in popularity.
The course will be an introduction to the use of XML, the XML Document Types, and the various protocols that are used in Web Services (such as SOAP, WSDL, WSIL, and UDDI). This course will give an overview of XML; study the Web Services specifications (SOAP, WSDL, WSIL and UDDI) in detail and Write both a Web Service client and a Web Service to conform to these protocols.
