Medical Informatics Systems

Catalog Description: This is a graduate course, seminar-style, to review the current practices and trends of IT applications in the health care industry.

Long Description: The complexity of health-care industry presents IT practitioners with formidable challenges. Vast, deeply heterogenous systems, interconnected via a multitude of technologies and protocols constitute the IT environment of a hospital. Medical imaging records, billing records, diagnostic records, payroll, etc are just of the few demanding applications. Support of research and education is also another mission of a health care IT system is supposed.

How do all these systems work together? What are the possible common protocols that professionals can establish to remove thick layers of unecessary complexity while maintain privacy and accuracy?
