Explanation of recent updates to the Ph.D. Program pages
August 30, 2004:
- Systems Core course list augmented.
August 24, 2004: major revision
- The changes affect the students entering in fall 2004 or later. Some of the highlights:
- A new course named "Big Ideas in Computer Science" replaced "Foundations of Computer Science." Students take this course during their first quarter. The course is graded on a Pass/Fail basis.
- A graduate "Discrete Mathematics" course has been added to the Core. Students take this course during their first quarter.
- The Core has been redefined within a new "Distribution Requirement" concept. The Core now permits limited choice in the Systems area. In addition to a new set of five Core courses, the Distribution Requirement includes the "Big Ideas" course and three electives.
- The deadline to complete the five Core courses has been extended to the spring quarter of the second year.
- During each quarter of their first two years, students are required to complete a "Research Focus" course.
- The deadline for the Masters Exam has been postponed to the fifth week of the first quarter of the third year.
- Students are encouraged to graduate in five years; departmental stipends end after the sixth year.
