Faculty and Other Academic Personnel
The Department of Computer Science at the University of Chicago invites applications from exceptionally qualified candidates in all areas of Computer Science for faculty positions at the ranks of Professor, Associate Professor, Assistant Professor, and Instructor. However, strongest consideration will be given this year to candidates in the following three areas: (1) systems and networking, (2) natural language processing, and (3) theory of computing.

The Department of Computer Science (cs.uchicago.edu) is the hub of a large, diverse computing community of two hundred researchers focused on advancing foundations of computing and driving its most advanced applications. Long distinguished in theoretical computer science and artificial intelligence, the Department is now building a strong Systems research group. This closely-knit community includes the Computation Institute, the Toyota Technological Institute, and Argonne's Mathematics and Computer Science Division.

Opportunities are available in computer systems, programming languages, networking, databases, data warehousing, cloud computing and other specialized areas. This is a part-time position and is not benefits eligible.

Lecturer Computer Systems - Requisition - 00999
The Department of Computer Science at the University of Chicago seeks a qualified lecturer to teach Introduction to Computer Systems in the Master's Program in Computer Science (CSPP). This course covers machine organization, including details of individual units (cpu, memory, io etc) and their interaction with each other. The course also includes machine and assembly language concepts, data representation and the management of data and control flow in a computer. We offer competitive compensation. This is a part-time position and is not benefits eligible.

Lecturer - Requisition - 00935
The Department of Computer Science at the University of Chicago seeks candidates for the position of Lecturer. Candidates must have experience teaching undergraduates in introductory and higher-level Computer Science courses with a focus on introductory programming, the theory and implementation of programming languages, and theory and implementation of contemporary database systems. In order to fit the needs of our curriculum, candidates must be comfortable with both the high-level concepts and fine details of current practice in imperative, object-oriented and functional programming and their implementation, and the design and implementation of contemporary databases. Languages used in the relevant courses have recently included C/C++, Java, Scheme, ML, Haskell, PHP and SQL. Experience teaching database-driven web development with technologies such as LAMP and JSP is a plus. Experience in mobile application development will also be favorably considered. Please note that this is a two-year position.
The successful candidate will teach and counsel a wide variety of undergraduates, train and supervise teams of graduate teaching assistants and graders, and coordinate curricular elements of introductory courses with many faculty throughout the department. Therefore strong interpersonal skills and a high degree of collegiality are essential.

Postdoctoral Scholars
Simons Postdoctoral Fellowship in Theoretical Computer Science
The Theory group at the University of Chicago is seeking candidates for a two- year postdoctoral position, starting the Fall of 2012. We welcome applications in all subfields of Theory, as well as related areas of Mathematics and Sciences. While the broadness of interests will be considered a positive factor, the major considerations in the selection process will be academic excellence, creativity, research accomplishments and promise displayed by the candidates.
The Theory group at the University of Chicago is enhanced by close collaboration with TTIC, an institution on the University campus with three faculty members in Theory. More information about the group and its activities can be found at http://theory.cs.uchicago.edu/.
Eligibility: Candidates must receive their PhD in the academic year 2011-2012. There are no other restrictions based on nationality or the location of the PhD granting body, and these will not play any role in the decision.
The position comes with a competitive salary and a generous travel/equipment research budget, both for the period from Fall 2012 to Summer 2014.

Large-Scale Systems Group
The Large-Scale Systems Group (LSSG) led by Professor Andrew Chien has several new Postdoctoral Scholar openings. These Scholars will lead research that explores the critical research challenges for the large-scale computing systems in a dynamic computer research environment at the University of Chicago. Future global-scale information systems have billions of elements, exabytes of data, and endemic impact on social, consumer, commercial, and scientific applications of unprecedented scale. Achieving this extraordinary scale poses difficult research challenges in systems, architecture, networking, and programming. In the Large-scale Systems Group, we are pursuing a number of projects in this area, including:
- 10x10 - Taming Heterogeneity for Energy-Efficient, General-Purpose Computing (compilers, architecture, performance)
- EASE - Easy Exabyte Computing (data-intensive computing, logic, programming, runtimes, system architecture)
There are additional opportunities to partner with researchers at the Computation Institute, Argonne National Laboratory, Toyota Technological Institute, and other leading research organizations.
