Mail in CS IMAP folders named "trash", "junk", "deleted messages" or "spam" (case insensitive) older than 30 days will be automatically deleted. If you don't want these messages deleted, move them to another folder.

The instructional Sybase server was down for an hour starting 3 pm, a disk had failed.

The air cooling unit in the Ryerson data center failed around 8 pm. We had to shut down most servers to avoid overheating the machines. Email and home directory servers were kept up. University facilities replaced a motor and services were restored around 5 pm March 11.

Our spam tagger was upgraded. The goal is for spam to be tagged with more "*"s, while ham gets fewer. You may want to monitor your spam folders to make sure this change works for your mail.

The departmental mailing list server mailman developed hardware problems at 1:30 pm. Service was restored by 4:30 pm. Any messages sent to mailing lists during this time were delayed, but all should have been processed eventually.

gargoyle.cs.uchicago.edu is now a Debian Unstable Linux machine. Previously it was a Sun Solaris 8 machine.

Java 1.5 is now the default Java on Debian Unstable machines. This means that /usr/bin/java and /usr/bin/javac resolve to programs in /opt/java2/jdk1.5.0/bin, and the environment variable JAVA_HOME is set to /opt/java2/jdk1.5.0 .

Due to a University Directive we can no longer provide unencrypted access to our departmental computers. This means you can no longer access our machines via telnet or ftp, but rather may use ssh and scp.
