Debian Unstable Linux upgrade
We are in the process of upgrading our Debian GNU/Linux desktop computers, including the Linux machines in the Regenstein Mac Lab, to a newer derivative of the Debian project's development distribution, Unstable.
While this will provide numerous advantages, such as faster software installs, more up-to-date libraries, and a larger software set, there will inevitably be bumps along the way.
As we roll out the new version to all the desktops, we're interested in getting as much feedback as possible, so we can solve any problems asap. If you have a techstaff-administered desktop, and would like to help us with early feedback, just email techstaff@cs.uchicago.edu and we'll schedule the upgrade of your computer.
Please note that newer versions of software may save your data files in formats that are not backwards compatible. For instance, if you create a new document with the new version of OpenOffice.org, you may not be able to open it on other machines which are still using the previous version. Please email techstaff@cs.uchicago.edu about any problems you encounter, or any new software you would like installed. We appreciate your help and any suggestions or bug reports you send us can help us refine the installation as we roll it out to all machines.
From a user's point of view, the primary difference should be in what software is installed, and where it is located. Please see our page on Finding Software for details.
