Deptartmental Computing Facilities

The computer facilities available through the Department of Computer Science at the University of Chicago comprise over 300 workstations, desktops and servers running a variety of operating systems.

These systems are distributed over faculty and administrative offices, graduate and undergraduate computing labs, as well as a restricted access, climate controlled machine room.

The machines are fully networked, and are part of the campus network, which is administered by the University's Department of Networking Services and Information Technologies. Departmental servers provide networked disk space and CPU, as well as standard computing services such as web hosting, email, DNS, etc.

A number of faculty research systems are supported, including small linux clusters, and file, web, cpu and database servers.

The Department employs a Systems Staff of three full time, plus some part time system administrators who provide support to faculty research systems, as well as general departmental computing services, such as installing new hardware and software, tape backups, and general systems trouble shooting and problem solving.
