CS Email: Configuring IMAP

Due to a University directive prohibiting unencrypted access, we can no longer offer unsecured POP service to email clients.

We do offer IMAP service, which is supported by many popular mail clients. POPS (secure POP) is also available.

IMAP Server Configuration

  • To use IMAP, your forward file: /stage/forward/$USER should contain:
    |imap

  • Email delivered before changing your forwaring information will not appear in your IMAP inbox. Contact techstaff@cs.uchicago.edu if you need that mail migrated.

IMAP Client Configuration

  • Email Address: user@cs.uchicago.edu
  • Mail Server Type: IMAP
  • Username: Your CS Username
  • Password: Your CS Password
  • Incoming Mail Server: laime.cs.uchicago.edu
    • Security: SSL
    • Port: 993
  • Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.cs.uchicago.edu
    • Security: START/TLS
    • Port: 587
Note: SSL causes connections to the IMAP server to be made on a specific port. Until SSL is enabled on your mail client, you will not be able to connect to the server.

Configuration of Specific Email Clients

IMAP Mail Folders

Mail folders can be created on the mail server. Some clients can also create local folders as well. Server folders should be visible from any client. Netscape/Mozilla users note: you must subscribe to any server folders. You can do this in the advanced section of Netscape preferences (accounts ==> server settings).

IMAP Mail Filtering with sieve

Procmail is not available for IMAP. See our page on using sieve
