Configure Thunderbird for IMAP
When you first start Thunderbird, you may be prompted to import your settings and mail folders from another program. We'll skip this step, choosing "Don't import anything."
Next you might be presented with the New Account Setup wizard. We want to create an "Email account," so select that option, and choose Next. You can type in whatever Name and email address you want to show up on the From line of the messages you send.
For the Server Information, you'll want to select IMAP and use laime.cs.uchicago.edu for the incoming server, and smtp.cs.uchicago.edu for the outgoing server.
Use your CS username for the "Incoming User Name" and then use whatever descriptive phrase or word you'd like for the Account Name.
When you choose finish, Thunderbird will attempt to contact the IMAP server for the first time, and will fail, since we haven't told it to use SSL. Go to "Tools"-"Account Settings"-"Server Settings" and select "Use secure connection (SSL)" and hit OK. Next close and reopen Thunderbird, and it should prompt you for your IMAP password. This is the same password you use for your CS account when logging in via SSH, or checking CS email.
If Thunderbird displays a "Website Certified by an Unknown Authority" dialog when you first connect to the IMAP server, select "Accept this Certificate Permanently." To view or remove a certificate Thunderbird has accepted, from the Thunderbird menu select Edit->Preferences->Privacy->View Certificates.
