Computing Services: Labs: The CS Linux Lab

If you ever have any questions, please stop by Ryerson 254 or email us at techstaff@cs.uchicago.edu.

The Department's Linux Lab is now located in the A Level of Regenstein Library. It consists of 20 machines, each running Linux, most consisting of this hardware configuration:

  • AMD K6-2 @ 400MHz
  • 128 MB RAM
  • 18 GB IBM hard drive
  • 100Mb/s Ethernet
  • Sony 17" Trinitron monitor (32bit, 1152x864)

To use these machines, you must have a Computer Science account. To get an account, please go to the main computing services page and follow the link for getting an account.

Remote Access

Each of the machines is firewalled so that only machines on our subnet can connect to its privileged ports. The unprivileged ports are accessible only from the uchicago.edu domain. The SSH port is the only exception --- it is available to machines anywhere in the world. This means that to log in to our machines from outside of our domain (your dorm room for example), you will need an SSH client program. For a discussion of how to obtain/setup SSH, please visit our SSH page.

Once you have an SSH client, you will be able to remotely log into our machines. For your easy reference, here are the machines names (they are named after train lines):
