Default settings for new mailman lists

In order to reduce the amount of spam that the mailman server is processing, the following default settings will be adopted for new lists.

Please note that these settings can be changed by the list administrator

If your list is open or public, the first setting below is probably wrong for your list.

Posts by non-members to a list will be automatically discarded.
Mailman setting: Privacy Options/Sender Filters: "Action to take for postings from non-members for which no explicit action is defined."

List moderators will not receive any email informing them that such a message has been discarded, nor will the non-member posting to the list. Non-members posting to lists are almost always spammers. Holding their messages wastes disk space, and informing moderators of the existence of such messages generates unnecessary traffic. Setting this opthion to discard simply deletes the message. reject sends a rejection notice to the sender.

Pending requests for moderator actions will be aggregated into one email and sent out once a day, not when the request is received.
Mailman setting: General Options: Should the list moderators get immediate notice of new requests, as well as daily notices about collected ones?

Most of these "requests" are generated by spam and are thus unnecessary traffic.

Messages sent to listname-bounces that were not originally sent by mailman will be automatically discarded.
Mailman setting: Should Mailman send you, the list owner, any bounce messages that failed to be detected by the bounce processor?

Messages of this sort are usually spammers writing to a bounce list.

Recommended settings

Messages containing images will be automatically discarded.
Mailman setting: Content Filtering: Remove message attachments that have a matching content type.

These messages are almost always spam. When they are not, they are usually larger than the default maximum message size and are held for moderator approval. If your list traffic will contain legitimate image files, please adjust the maximum message size when you disable this content filtering.
