OpenOffice

OpenOffice is an office productivity suite, containing various desktop applications, such as a word processor, spreadsheet, presentation manager, and drawing program. It is installed on our Linux machines, and access simply by typing soffice.

Running OpenOffice the first time

The first time you run OpenOffice, it will take you through a graphical installation procedure. The result will be a directory of files in your home directory. Please give the following answers to its questions:
  • Accept the license.
  • Enter User Data: No entry necessary, just hit next
  • Select Installation Type: Choose Workstation
  • Select Installation Directory: The default directory given will be your home directory. This is fine. Click next.
    • It may ask you if it can create the directory. Click yes
  • Click Install
  • The installation should start. This may take a while.
  • Click Complete to finish the installation.
  • Now type soffice to run the office suite.

Printing from OpenOffice

In OpenOffice:

  • File ==> Print
  • It will say GENERIC PRINTER. This is fine, OpenOffice uses the environment variable that specifies your printer. Instructions to configure this can be found here.
  • Pick up your document
