Using USB Flash Drives on UofC Computer Science Machines

Most of the CS Machines in Ryerson, Hinds and the MacLab have been configured for use with USB Drives. Any type of USB Drive (Flash or external hdd) should be mountable by our machines. Here are instructions on how to correctly mount the drive on our system.

  • Connect the USB drive to the computer. Most of the USB connections are on the back of our machines.
  • Open up an x-terminal and type: "mount /usbdrive"
  • To access your content on the drive type: "cd /usbdrive; ls" and see if your files are there.
  • When you are done and before you log off type: "cd; umount /usbdrive". If it fails, make sure that nothing is accessing the drive (or any x-terms with the current directory being /usbdrive/...)
  • Remove your USB Drive
