Applied Math Literacy

This course covers some advanced topics leading to research areas, but does so by giving illustrations of how the theory is developed, avoiding extensive details. The topics will intersperse elementary background with topics in current research, and will be understandable by second year math grad students. The lectures are modular to some extent. Topics for winter 2004 will include:

• models for fluids from Newton to Rivlin and Eriksen (existence, uniqueness, computational algorithms, million dollar prizes, and outstanding controversies);
• models for economic equilibrium based on Monge-Ampere-Kantorovich type equations
