Professors Shan Lu and Heather Zheng Named ACM Distinguished Members

Two University of Chicago Computer Science faculty, Professor Shan Lu and Neubauer Professor Heather Zheng, were among 62 people named as Distinguished Members by the Association for Computing Machinery in 2019.

ACM Distinguished Members are recognized for their achievements in the computing field, and are selected by their peers for making a significant impact in computer science and related fields. Both Lu and Zheng were honored for outstanding scientific contributions to computing.

“Each year it is our honor to select a new class of Distinguished Members,” said ACM President Cherri M. Pancake. “In everything we do, our overarching goal is to build a community wherein computing professionals can grow professionally and, in turn, contribute to the field and the broader society. We are delighted to recognize these individuals for their contributions to computing, and we hope that the careers of the 2019 ACM Distinguished Members will continue to prosper through their participation with ACM.”

Lu, who was promoted to full professor earlier this year, studies software reliability and efficiency, particularly detecting, diagnosing, and fixing functional and performance bugs in large software systems. Recently, her research has received best paper awards at the 2019 International Conference on Software Engineering (ICSE) and the ACM Symposium on Operating Systems Principles (SOSP).

Zheng joined the University of Chicago in 2017, and her Systems, Algorithms, Networks, and Data (SAND) Laboratory with Neubauer Professor Ben Zhao applies data analytics and machine learning to discover and understand the fundamental structures underlying various social, mobile networks and medical systems, the processes and user behaviors that drive dynamics in these networks, and potential vulnerability to attacks and privacy leaks.
