Steve Tuecke (1967 - 2019)

November 04, 2019

Steve Tuecke, Globus co-founder and former Deputy Director of the Computation Institute, passed away on November 2, 2019.

With collaborators including University of Chicago Professor Ian Foster, Tuecke created the Globus Toolkit software and co-founded Globus, a UChicago non-profit service for secure, reliable data management used at hundreds of universities, national laboratories, and other research institutions. With Foster, he also led the Computation Institute, a joint initiative of UChicago and Argonne National Laboratory that facilitated the use of computation to advance and accelerate all fields of discovery.

"Steve chose to devote his career to providing better tools for scientists," Foster said. "This overriding concern shaped everything that he did during his 30 years at Argonne National Laboratory, Univa Corporation, and the University of Chicago. It drove him to produce marvelous software systems, notably the Globus Toolkit, and, from 2010 onwards, the Globus service, that have had an outsized influence on research practice."
